DirectAdmin: Then and Now

A Lightweight Legacy

DirectAdmin was created in 2003 as a lightweight alternative to cPanel and Plesk. Its C++ backend made it fast and efficient, attracting hosting providers who valued low resource usage over extensive features. For years, it served this niche well.

However, the hosting landscape has changed significantly. Customers now expect Docker support, modern APIs, WordPress management tools, and comprehensive security features. DirectAdmin's minimalist approach, once its strength, has become a limitation.

Ownership Changes

In 2022, DirectAdmin was acquired by JETALICO (which also owns WebPros, the parent company of cPanel and Plesk). This consolidation raised concerns in the hosting community about future pricing changes, similar to what happened with cPanel after its WebPros acquisition in 2018.
